When to Aerate Your Lawn in Douglasville, GA

4 min read

If your lawn feels spongy, water pools instead of soaking in, or your grass just isn't filling in the way it used to, compacted soil is usually the culprit — and it's especially common here in West Metro Atlanta.

Why aeration matters more in Georgia

Much of the soil around Douglasville is heavy red clay. Clay compacts easily under foot traffic, mowing equipment, and normal weather cycles, which chokes off the air, water, and nutrients your grass roots need. Aeration pulls small plugs of soil out of the lawn, relieving that compaction and letting everything reach the root zone again.

When to do it

Timing depends on your grass type:

  • Bermuda and Zoysia (the two most common warm-season grasses in this area) should be aerated in mid-spring through summer, once the grass is fully out of winter dormancy and actively growing. Aerating too early, while the lawn is still dormant, does more harm than good.
  • St. Augustine, common on shadier metro lots, follows a similar window — wait until it's actively growing before aerating.

How often

Most lawns benefit from aeration once a year. If you're on heavy clay or have a high-traffic yard — kids, pets, regular foot traffic — twice a year (spring and again in early fall) keeps the lawn performing at its best.

A simple way to check if you need it

Push a screwdriver into your lawn. If it's hard to push in more than an inch or two, your soil is compacted and aeration will help.
